Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank Explained: Indian Numerology and Your Money Numbers

Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank Explained: Indian Numerology and Your Money Numbers

If you have looked at numerology from India or Nepal, you have met three words: Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank. Western sources use different words for similar ideas, and the two sets rarely line up neatly. This guide explains what each one means, shows a worked example, and tells you how they relate to the three numbers we use here.

The short version

  • Mulank (root number): your birth day, reduced to one digit.
  • Bhagyank (destiny number): your full birth date, reduced to one digit.
  • Namank (name number): the letters of a name turned into numbers and reduced.

Most Indian practitioners read all three together, looking at how they support or pull against each other.

Mulank: the number of your birth day

Take the day of the month you were born and add its digits until you reach one digit. Born on the 14th? 1 + 4 = 5. Born on the 9th? Mulank 9. Born on the 22nd? 2 + 2 = 4.

Because it only uses the day, there are just nine possible results, and every person born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd shares a Mulank of 5. Traditionally it describes your everyday temperament: how you come across and how you react.

In Western numerology the closest idea is the birth day number. We do not use it as one of our main numbers, so it is not in the calculator.

Bhagyank: the number of your life path

Add every digit of your full birth date, then reduce to one digit. For 14 March 1990:

  1. Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
  2. Month: 3
  3. Year: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1
  4. Add them: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9

Bhagyank describes the path your life tends to follow. This is the closest match to the Life Path Number, which we call your Wealth Path Number.

The one difference: Indian practice normally reduces everything to a single digit. We keep 11, 22 and 33 as Master Numbers. For most birth dates the two results are the same.

Namank: the number of your name

Namank turns the letters of a name into numbers and reduces the total. This is where traditions split most:

  • Many Indian practitioners use the Chaldean system (numbers 1 to 8, with 9 held back as sacred), and often read the name a person actually uses.
  • We use the Pythagorean system (A=1 to I=9) and your full birth name.

So the same name can give different totals in each system. The closest match to Namank on this site is your Money Blueprint Number, calculated from all the letters of your full name. Your Abundance Desire Number uses only the vowels, and has no direct Indian equivalent. The glossary shows the letter values side by side.

In Vedic tradition each Mulank is linked with a planet. Here it is, with a plain-language money reading for reflection:

  • 1, Sun: leadership and initiative. Money follows ownership. Watch for doing everything alone.
  • 2, Moon: sensitivity and cooperation. Money flows through relationships. Watch for undercharging to keep the peace.
  • 3, Jupiter: expression and teaching. Money follows what you share. Watch for scattering your offers.
  • 4, Rahu: structure and persistence. Money follows systems. Watch for rigidity.
  • 5, Mercury: communication and trade. Money follows variety and speed. Watch for restlessness.
  • 6, Venus: care and beauty. Money follows trust. Watch for giving away too much.
  • 7, Ketu: depth and analysis. Money follows expertise. Watch for staying invisible.
  • 8, Saturn: discipline and results. Money follows consistency. Watch for work becoming the whole life.
  • 9, Mars: energy and courage. Money follows causes you believe in. Watch for burning out.

These are traditional reading frames, not predictions. Use them for questions such as "where do I give my energy away?" rather than answers.

How to use all three together

A simple, practical way to combine them:

  1. Compare Mulank and Bhagyank. If they match or are close in theme, the day-to-day you and the long path pull the same way. If they differ, notice where that tension shows up in your work.
  2. Compare with our numbers. Put your Bhagyank beside your Wealth Path and your Namank beside your Money Blueprint. Differences usually come from Master Numbers or from the letter system, not from a mistake.
  3. Pick one question. Choose a single money habit to examine this month, and test it against real numbers: income, costs and time.

A caution about "fixes"

Some sellers in every country offer name changes, lucky numbers or special spellings, sometimes for a fee. We do not recommend paying for any of these. Numerology works best as a mirror for reflection, and the decisions that change your finances are made with real information. This is not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?

Mulank (root number) comes from the day you were born, reduced to a single digit. Bhagyank (destiny number) comes from your full birth date, reduced to a single digit. Mulank describes your everyday nature; Bhagyank describes the path your life tends to follow.

Is Bhagyank the same as Life Path or Wealth Path?

Almost. Both add up your full birth date. The difference is that Indian practice normally reduces 11, 22 and 33 to a single digit, while our Wealth Path Number keeps them as Master Numbers.

What is Namank?

Namank is the name number, calculated from the letters of a name. Many Indian practitioners use the Chaldean letter values, while we use Pythagorean values and calculate from your full birth name. Our Money Blueprint Number is the closest match.

Do I need to change my name spelling to improve my money?

No. Some practitioners suggest changing spellings to reach a certain number, and some charge for it. We do not recommend paying to change your name or buying lucky numbers. Use the numbers to reflect and plan, and make money decisions on real information.
